Notes

  • The Bible was given to the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum at Colonial Williamsburg in 1974 possibly because of the ornate binding.
  • The 1900 U.S. Census (Floyd District, Scott County Virginia) lists Jno H. Bickley as born in 1837 with the occupation of farmer. He had been married 33 years to his wife, Rhoda, age 48. They had seven children, with six alive in 1900. Children at home were W.E. (age 26) and Grover B. (age 12). A photograph of a couple which may be John and Rhoda was found inside the Bible.
  • Anna Belle Long returned home to die and an obituary from the Bristol Virginia newspaper is enclosed in the Bible.
  • The 1910 U.S. Census (Knoxville, Tennessee) lists Charles Bickley, widower and merchant, with two daughters, Mary H. (age 10) and Rhoda E. (age 7). An obituary with a picture of Charles is enclosed in the Bible.
  • An image of Myrtle L. Bickley’s gravestone can be viewed: Bickley Cemetery, Scott County, Virginia. Enclosed in the Bible is a note certifying the cause of death (Bright’s disease) signed and dated by the doctor and an obituary clipped from an unnamed newspaper.
