James McHenry letter, written as aide-de-camp to Lafayette, to William Smith dated July 30, 1781. William Smith was a Baltimore merchant who had served in the Continental Congress. McHenry writes that Cornwallis is confined to Williamsburg where American forces keep his army under observation. McHenry hints at the prospects for victory and peace noting that France and Spain will stand by America.
