Diary of John Lyle(ca. 1783)

The diary, dating to 1783, belonged to shoemaker John Lyle (born Caithness, Scotland), a resident of Essex County, Virginia. It is a record detailing the names of persons from whom he had received commissions and the amount of payments, as well as notes to himself and a very brief war record. Collection also includes Lyle’s military discharge. Lyle was discharged after 8 years of loyal service to His Majesty’s army. He served in the 71st regiment under Major General Thomas Stirling and Captain Alexander MacLeod. The seat of the regiment was in Jamaica.
