WILLIAMSBURG, July 23, 1772.
At Oporto, the 20th of March, died the Reverend and Honourable James Horrocks, Counsellor of State to his Majesty for Virginia, Commissary to the Bishop of London, President of William & Mary College, and Rector of Bruton; a Gentleman well versed in several Branches of sound Learning, particularly the Mathematicks, and eminently possessed of those Virtues which increase in Value as they are farthest from Ostentation.

About this entry:
James Horrocks was born in Yorkshire, graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge and came to Virginia in 1762. He was appointed President of the College of William and Mary in 1764 at the age of thirty and married Frances Everard two years later. He was in London in 1771 to promote the appointment of an American bishop in the Church of England. After Horrocks' death in Portugal, Mrs. Horrocks returned to Virginia and made her home with her father, Thomas Everard.
