About this entry:

The tobacco trade with France played an important role during the American Revolution as tobacco paid for the arms and war supplies needed from Europe. The price of North American tobacco rose after the war began because of the difficulty of obtaining it. Therefore, the Betsey could do its patriotic duty and profit from it.
